Sense: Revolutionizing Urban Security with Innovative Sensor Technology

A New Era of Urban Safety

Urban security cameras are usually inconspicuous devices that go unnoticed by passersby. However, designer Roberto Maurizio Paura aims to change this with his groundbreaking creation, Sense. This urban sensor is designed to be noticed, recognized, and appreciated by citizens as a source of safety and convenience.

Sense is not your typical security camera. Its sleek and linear shape allows for easy integration into urban architecture, ensuring that it stands out in a crowd. But Sense is more than just a visually appealing device; it is equipped with advanced artificial intelligence algorithms that enable it to detect a wide range of dangerous events, such as fire and smoke, abandoned objects, and even facial recognition and vehicle plate identification. With its ability to monitor crowded areas in public places, Sense provides the highest level of protection against suspicious and dangerous incidents.

The realization of Sense was made possible through the use of parametric 3D modeling software. This allowed the design team to modify the device's details based on study models and accommodate the necessary electronic components. The prototype was then created using the Selective Laser Sintering technique and engineered for injection molding using polycarbonate.

With its durable 2.5mm polycarbonate construction, Sense is built to withstand the rigors of urban environments. Its dimensions of 250mm (W), 93mm (D), and 120mm (H) make it compact yet powerful. Installation is a breeze, as Sense can be easily mounted on streetlights and in highly trafficked locations such as shopping centers, harbors, airports, and train stations. The rear connector installation allows for precise alignment of the optic to the ground, and maintenance can be performed without removing the sensor from its position.

The development of Sense began in early 2016 for the European market. Extensive research was conducted to analyze existing outdoor sensors and create a design that seamlessly integrates into a smart city environment. The goal was to create a sensor that not only provides valuable data for city environmental analysis but also serves as a symbol of active service designed for the safety and well-being of citizens.

The design team faced several challenges during the development process. They had to create a system that could accommodate a wide range of optics for the sensor, design a passive heatsink that could withstand atmospheric agents, and optimize production costs by using a limited number of shells. Additionally, special attention was given to the realization of a rear connector that allows for positioning along three axes of freedom.

Sense has already received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Security, Safety, and Surveillance Products Design category in 2017. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contribute to quality of life improvements, and make the world a better place.

With its unique aesthetics, advanced technology, and commitment to urban safety, Sense is set to revolutionize the way we perceive and interact with security devices. It is a testament to the power of design and innovation in creating a safer and more secure future for our cities.
